EV biology, diagnostics, engineering, and therapeutics
Zach Troyer

I am a scientist interested in utilizing extracellular vesicles and other biological nanoparticles for treating disease. I aim to engineer EVs using viral or human proteins to enhance their natural intercellular communication abilities. I received my bachelors of science in Microbiology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I then did my PhD in Molecular Virology at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio, in the laboratory of Dr. Chip Tilton. I joined the Witwer lab as a postdoctoral fellow in the Fall of 2021. I’m very interested in how human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) and their encoded proteins can be used for EV engineering, as they possess a unique virus/human dual identity.
